I do think shunts have a high failure rate. When you get a good one, you've got a gem! Shunts fail for various reasons. Sometimes they are defective from the manufacturer, sometimes they react to the person's body chemistry -- like when my aunt had a watch that kept stopping when she wore it, but when she gave it to me, it worked fine.
